Future of Urban Places Summit – UBC Master of Urban Design Forum – September 15, 2016.
Each year the Master of Urban Design Program chooses a theme to help organize our studies and our contributions to regional and global dialogues on urban design. This year we are aligning our forum with Placemaking Week (September 12 – 16, 2016). Our primary focus will be the one day long Future of Places Summit to be held September 15. The Future of Places Summit is part of a larger set of activities to occur that week, including Pro Walk/ Pro Bike / Pro Place, Sept 12 – Sept 15 (http://walkbikeplaces.org/) and the Placemaking Leadership Forum , September 14 – 17 (http://placemakingweek.org/plf/)

Building upon the momentum of the 2015 Future of Places conference in Stockholm, Sweden, Ax:son Johnson Foundation – representing its partners UN-Habitat and Project for Public Spaces – is pleased to announce the next Future of Places (FoP) Summit research symposium, September 15, in Vancouver, Canada, as part of Placemaking Leadership Forum, taking place during the first-ever Placemaking Week (September 12-16).
Relationship to United Nations Habitat III Conference in Quito. Putting Research into Practice: From Talk to Action
The purpose of the United Nations Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016 is to define a “New Urban Agenda” to guide the rapid global urbanisation that will continue to increase over the next twenty years. Results from previous Future of Places symposia have already contributed a number of Key Messages to initial drafts of this document, but to ensure that the potential impacts of applying a placemaking lens to urban/economic development are fully realised, the Vancouver Future of Places Summit will focus on tangible strategies that member states can implement with their local partners.
Specifically, who will implement the New Urban Agenda? What tools and strategies will they use? Where can these resources be found? How can they be developed, shared, and refined for local application under diverse conditions? This is the focus of the Vancouver research symposium – and it is the topic for which we invite your contribution.
